One, I am definitely my own worst critic when it comes to my work. I've literally trashed the same image 15 times because I was not satisfied with how it was turning out. I think the problem is, I'm TOO detail-oriented, especially when it comes to drawing people. I focus way too much on little details and once it is off, I'm done with it and scratch it.
Two, I need to stop being so detail-oriented with my art. Sometimes it is good to be minimal. Granted my detail-orientation has gotten me pretty far in my life (like my latest promotion at work). But with my own art, it reaches a point where I get so frustrated with myself that I just stop working on it all together.
Then I read Marvel's new Noir series. While the stories are a little off from the typical Marvel path, I absolutely fell in love with the art style. It's so evocative with so many emotions without being overly detailed. It was inspiring to say the least, and exactly the challenge I needed.
So I began experimenting with developing my own noir style. I'm going to post my two works so far... the self portrait was just a test to make myself focus on the bigger picture, instead of the details. The second one I worked a lot more at providing a feeling of sensuality and strength while still staying to the minimal contrasting style.
Feedback is much appreciated
